Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our ministry meets every Thursday morning in the church hall at 10:30 to work on prayer shawls for our parish family and friends.

Shawls are available in the parish office for anyone dealing with an illness.

We are in need of more knitters. If you cannot meet on Thursday and can knit or crochet, we have yarn and patterns for you to work on in the comfort of your home.

Project HOPE The Town of Barrington has undertaken a major community youth project in an effort to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless and hungry in our state. Entitled Project HOPE, this initiative invites high school students who live, attend school, or worship in the community to come together to simulate a night in the life of the homeless. Conceived and developed by Beyond Our Walls (BOW), a non-profit interfaith organization that serves as a catalyst for social change, Project HOPE has taken a three-pronged approach to bring attention to and create understanding for the homeless and their related issues. They include:

Monday, March 17 – Friday, March 28

Barrington High School Barrington High School collection of personal care items (shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, mouthwash and soap) for the homeless

Wednesday, March 19, 7:00 p.m.

Barrington High School Performance of “But for the Grace,” a one-man play performed written by David Eliet and performed by Bob Jaffe, was created from over 70 interviews with food pantry clients, staff and volunteers. The stories told in the play are as varied as the circumstances that led each character to seek food assistance. Through the theater experience, the audience will begin to understand the pain, fear, humiliation and injustice of hunger, as well as the resiliency of the human spirit and the importance of ending hunger. The play is free and open to the public. Donations of canned goods and/or monetary gifts for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank will be accepted as the entry fee.

March 29-30, beginning with check in @ 4 p.m. on Saturday evening; ending Sunday morning

Barrington High School Varsity Soccer Field Homeless Awareness Sleep Out - Project HOPE will culminate with a sleep out for high school students on the BHS Varsity Soccer Field that will simulate the plight of homelessness. Students will be given cardboard boxes to assemble and use as their shelter for the evening. Students will also prepare bagged lunches that will be delivered to Crossroads in Providence for distribution to the homeless. Donations of food and clothing will be accepted from the community over the course of the sleep out; all donations will be delivered to the RI Community Food Bank and other local charities. Pre-registration is necessary for sleep out participants.

Read the Barrington Times March 8 story about the St. Luke's April 2007 Mission Trip to the Mustard Seed Community in Montego Bay, Jamaica. This year the Mission Trip is planned for April 2008.
Fund-raisers will begin to run to defray the cost of supplies and expenses of the Mission Trip to Jamaica. Your generosity will touch not only our group going to Jamaica but also the abandoned and handicapped children being helped during this visit. Annual Gently Used Coat Drive

I wanted to update everyone on the success we had with the coat drive. In spite of the "Extratropical Storm" on Saturday we collected 828 coats, hats, scarves, and misc items of clothing to give to Amos House, Tap-In, McCauley House, RI Veterans Action Center and RI Donation Exchange. I want to thank everyone who signed up to help me. There were so many jobs and so many hands. I truly appreciate everyone's help. If you want to help and couldn't this year just remember there is always next year! Thank you and God bless.

This year the Annual Coat Drive will be held on Saturday, November 3rd from 10am until 2pm. If you have gently used clean outerwear that you wish to donate please come by. There is a Drive-Thru service offered so you do not need to leave the comfort of your car.

If you do not have gently used outerwear but wish to donate something please consider "NEW" items of clothing. Some of the items you can give during the month of October are:

H.O.M.E Mission Trip Aug 19-25

H.O.M.E (Homemakers Opportunity for Meaningful Employment). It was founded by a Carmelite Nun, Sr. Lucy Poulan, 35 years ago when the shoe industry supporting the area left and also left many people in poverty.

Mission trip from St. Luke's Parish St. Luke’s H.O.M.E Mission Trip, August 19-25, 2007 was our first outreach to the Orland, Maine area. The mission team arrived home safe and in high spirits. Our team consisted of 12 high school boys and 16 adults. Our work varied from house building to cleaning the chapel,cleaning the day care center and everything in between. We picked the vegetable garden, sorted clothes, worked in the day care and provided many needed resources.

We renewed a bedroom in the men’s shelter by sanding the floor and painting the entire room. We made a difference. But most of all we had the opportunity to hear from Sr. Lucy, founder and president of H.O.M.E. Co Op, who so beautifully told the group how and why H.O.M.E exists. I think we were all touched by there goal of living the gospel message in their everyday life. We wish to thank all the hands and hearts who went with us.

Men's Fellowship Group

Who We Are… The St. Luke’s Men’s Fellowship Group meets monthly in the church hall (basement) for about 90 minutes for the purpose of creating a relaxed, informal venue for men of all ages and backgrounds to network with one another, study the bible, learn the Catechism of the Catholic faith, and discuss important issues in our community. All men are welcome. You do not need to pre-register, or be from St. Luke’s, or even be Catholic. We are comprised of about sixty guys, and around thirty will usually attend on any given evening. We all have busy schedules and attend when we can. Our meetings take place around a large, rectangular group of tables, and are led by a different participant each month who volunteers to prepare a theme and arrange a guest speaker for the evening. The sessions tend to be very interactive and are full of questions, comments and laughter. We meet from 7-8:30pm and many guys will stay around for coffee, donuts, pizza and conversation afterwards. This is all about taking a little time each month to renew your spirit, make some new friends, spend time with some old friends, and listening, learning, laughing, thinking and talking about important ideas and issues. We hope that you will stop by one evening and see for yourself.

When We Will Meet Next… Tuesday August 21 @ 7pm…..Fr. Bob Hawkins and our own Bill Sweeney will lead us in a discussion on the topic of “Stewardship”.

Thursday September 27 @ 7pm…Guest speakers Cathy Sullivan of the Barrington Substance Abuse Task Force and Barrington Police Chief John LaCross will lead a discussion moderated by our own Dave Renner dealing with issues of parental irresponsibility, drug and alcohol abuse by local children, and how we are called as Christians to take responsibility for addressing these problems.

Thursday October 25 @ 7pm...Fr. Domenic Papa, noted expert on issues of Sainthood, and our own Mark Biagetti will lead a discussion on Sainthood including the process of canonization, the history of Saints, and the lives of some well known Saints.

***We are planning an exciting meeting for either November or December that will be hosted by Dr. Sandra Keating, adjunct Professor of Theology at Providence College and a top advisor to Pope Benedict XVI on Muslim relations. This will prove to be a fascinating opportunity to learn more about both Christian and Muslim beliefs around the world, gain an understanding of what has led to increased terrorism by Muslim radicals, and develop a perspective on where this conflict is headed. You won’t want to miss this one!

Dr. Keating is a member of the Vatican's Commission for Religious Relations with the Muslims. The only American serving on the commission, Dr. Keating was appointed to a five-year term by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2005. Dr. Keating joins scholars from around the world in Rome to discuss pressing Christian and Islamic issues. Included in the group are professors, a human rights lawyer, and a physicist, who hail from countries in Africa, as well as Lebanon, Spain, and India. As a specialized research team for the Vatican, the commission's goal is to help to enhance relations among Muslims and Christians under the direction of the Pope. Dr. Keating, who can read and speak classical Arabic fluently, conducts the majority of her research involved in translating apologetical texts--early works written by Muslims and Christians in the ninth century. A member of the Providence College faculty since the fall of 2003, Dr. Keating has studied Catholic and Muslim theology for approximately 20 years.

Dear David, Fr. Robert, and Contemporary Choir,

Thank you for your most generous gift of $3000 to St. Mary's Restoration Fund. I know you put a lot of effort into the production of your CD (many hours I'm sure) and energy into the sale of the fruit of your labor of love. Everything you put into it makes it all the more precious to us, and very much appreciated. We are going to apply your gift to some work that needs to be done on our organ. The first thing we are going to do is rebuild the protective canopy over the organ pipes. The old canopy is made of canvas on a wood frame, and is torn and disintegrating. It makes the pipes vulnerable to dust and debris. We are also looking to make some other repairs that I'm told are necessary just to keep the organ functioning. Eventually, when and if we can raise enough money, we would like to completely restore the organ. I understand the last major work done on the organ was around 1918.

So far we have raised enough money to completely repaint the sanctuary - going back to the original historic colors - and to clean and tuckpoint the bricks and seal around the windows. This latter work is about to begin, and has been a priority since right after the hurricane. The insurance is paying for a new roof - still in process. When the "envelope" is sealed we can concentrate on other areas as we are able to raise money. Another small project is rebuilding the catwalks above the ceiling and opening up a larger and easier access hatch. This will help us to get regular termite inspections and maybe even put a few lights in the ceiling vents. Termites are a big problem here in New Orleans. I've already cut some hatches so we can get beneath the floor to inspect for termites. There was no way to get underneath the floor before.

I hope you will be able to come and visit us some time. It would be great to have your choir lead us in song at one of our liturgies. We don't have a choir - yet. But we do have a great cantor.

"Rejoice Tonight" CD

"Rejoice Tonight" was released in December 2006, and the first printing of 500 cds sold out in one weekend. Profits from sales of the recording (over $3000 so far) were sent to St. Mary of the Assumption Church in New Orleans, to help repair the pipe organ that was damaged by hurricane Katrina. St. Mary's, incidentally, is featured prominently in many books by the author Anne Rice.

The cd featured all current members of the group, and many former ones. In all, eighteen musicans contributed to the recording. It was dedicated to the two previous Pastors of St. Luke's: Msgr. Ferland and Fr. Jenkinson.

Initial recording of the drums was done at the church, but the bulk of the cd was recorded in David Lauria's basement! The song "Rejoice Tonight" was written specifically for the cd. Contemporary Choir

The St. Luke's Contemporary Choir of Barrington, RI began as a traditional "folk group" in the fall of 1988. Comissioned to provide music for an overflow Mass in the school gymnasium (which frequently served more than four hundred people) the original group had two guitars, three vocalists, and only enough hymnals for about 1/3 of the congregation! Currently there are twelve members: guitar, bass, drums, percussion, organ, and vocals comprise a typical Sunday lineup. After an expansion of the church building was completed in 2000, the group moved into the choir loft and took over the 11:30 Mass.
It is this choir's goal to provide traditional music with up-to-date arrangements for Catholic services. The music of David Haas, Marty Haugen and Tom Kendzia is interwoven with more traditional Organ/Choir standards and all is played in a joyful style that has similarity to Christian Worship groups. This bringing-together of styles can be heard on cd with the release of "Rejoice Tonight," a seven-song disc containing many seasonal Christmas favorites as well as a new piece written by director David J. Lauria.

The Ushers and Greeters of St. Luke’s Parish like to meet people and make friends while serving the Lord and fellow parishioners. Ushers and Greeters improve our warmth and hospitality by having someone at all entrances to the church, at every Mass, to greet all who come to worship. In addition we will when needed help parishioners find a seat, and assist in collecting the weekly offering. This position is open to all men and women, young and old. If you feel this is for you please call the rectory to show your interest, or talk to any of the greeters and ushers at the Mass you attend. We who are ushers and greeters would love to have you join us so as to triple the current amount of people doing this now.
